I played (Not very well) in a charity golf match in Spain, and Martin also played, and at the prize giving that evening, my name was called out to collect my prize, I was very surprised, as I said I had played that well. But the surprise award, was for the highest scoring Spurs supporter. I still can not bring myself to play with the Spurs Golf balls that Martin handed me.
Many thanks for that Martin, and all those wonderful memories of you scoring some wonderful goals, for our once again wonderful Spurs.

My dad was friendly with Cyril Knowles, and sat in the car with Martin Chivers, on thier way to the Lane for Martins home debut. Martin asked my dad, “do you think the fans will like me?”
It turned out to be a very silly question.

My dad only mentioned it once, years later, but I never forgot it.

As a Kid yes Martin Chivers was a hero , top man at the club for me was Big Pat. Never got to meet PJ however Chivers played a Spurs Legends game at Molesey 10 years back and let himself down in a big way . He acted the primadonna big star ignoring pleas to sign autographs in the pissing rain , my son was 7 at the time in a full body cast laid flat in a wheelchair recovering from an operation from Perthes disease . He’ll never be forgiven .

Ralph Coates by contrast was a perfect gentlemen and looked no different than ever . Jimmy Neighbour the star of the night looked as fit as a flea and seemed almost capable at the time of premiership football , may he rest in peace .

Chivers , a tarnished memory , no more .

Martin signed for Spurs for £125k with Frank Saul going to Southampton in part exchange. A British transfer record at the time. Martin appeared to worry about the record and was very timid in his early days and the fans became frustrated with him. For a big man he never seemed to use his size prefering deft skills and a suprising pace. He was injured not long after signing for Spurs and was out with the knee injury for nearly a year.

I remeber going to see him play a researve game on his comeback trail. Before the match kicked off in the warming up. Martin came over near me to retrieve the ball and i shouted that i want a hatrick from him in this game. He winked and smiled at me and then delivered Six goals.

He was soon back in the first team and with Jimmy Greaves moving on he appeared to gain in confidence and started scoring regularly. He found strength and comitment to the Spurs cause turning the fans in his favour at the same time. For a while he was probably the best centre forward in the world. Leading the line and scoring for fun.

Martin Chivers was one of Spurs greatest forwards of all time and whats more a greast bloke
